A Year of Reading

Y'all:

Here comes my first blog post of the new year.  Oh yeah, I intend to give Idle Prattle some love and attention in 2016.

Just the other day I saw the hashtag #52booksin52weeks pop up in a few places on social media.  I also spent most of my 3-day-weekend cooped up in my apartment playing video games on Steam and battling depression without the aid of alcohol.  I'm not really a "New Year New Me" kind of person, but I got to thinking...

In my end-of-year wrap-up I mentioned my recent shift in attitude regarding New Year's resolutions and such.  Well, I can't say I'm completely without resolutions.  Anyone who doesn't want to grow as a person is taking up too much space.  There are things I want to improve.  Reading is one of them.

Over the last decade or so my reading ability has slowed.  Matching that, my consumption of books has slowed.  This is not good.  I read a lot of articles online on a variety of topics, but I used to be a voracious reader of books.  I would like to get back to that.  I saw the hashtag I mentioned above and decided that it popping up now was an omen.

Naturally, I shall remain a consumer of video games, a writer of words, and an all-around crazy-person.  That's just who I am.  I do resolve to dedicate more time to reading.  I'm not restricting myself to one genre, author, time period, etc.  I plan to read religious texts, [shorter] classics, fantasy, Shakespeare, sci-fi, autobiographies, and so forth.

I am going to have to be careful regarding the length of books I choose, especially as I get the ball rolling.  Once I get into a solid groove I can chance adding some longer texts, but for now, I'm sticking to things on the shorter side.  I also plan to reread some books that I enjoy, as well as do a better reading of books I was assigned at University (because, let's be honest, I didn't read them all thoroughly).

I was also inspired by this epic Ted Talk to read more.  While I lack the means to go to the lengths this woman went to, I will do what I can to add color to the voices I'm reading this year.

So about an hour ago I finished book one.  I haven't really planned out my reading year yet, so suggestions are welcome (just keep the page count in mind, please, because I don't read as fast as I used to!).  For now I'm going to stick to what's readily at hand--my Kindle app--as there are plenty of books on there that I have to either read or reread.

Enough stalling...let's get down to business!

[Mikie's note:  I moved book 1 to its own blog entry. It originally appeared here.  Don't panic!]

  1. Hi Michael, Welcome to 52 Books. Happy you decided to join in and get back into reading more. Ann Morgan is quite remarkable with her reading around the world. I start out with grandiose plans to travel the world armchair style, hence the themes on 52 Book and hit more countries. Stepping outside our reading comfort zones is always difficult and hard not to fall back on comfort reads. Interesting first book. Best wishes for an great reading year! Look forward to hearing all about your reads.
